Sunshine and blue skies.
Warm weather and green grass.
Pollen.
Soon we’ll be seeing the tell-tale signs that spring has arrived. And with spring comes the natural urge to spend more time enjoying the outdoors.
But spending more time outside means less time at the gym. So how can you get in your workouts while enjoying all the benefits of spring?
Fortunately, it’s not very hard at all.
First, let’s talk to those of you with kids in sports. Since you have to lug them from practice to practice and game to game, why not turn that time into some productive workout time?
At practices, instead of sitting on the sidelines playing Words with Friends, you can walk or run around the field. Or do lunges around the field.
At game time, since you want to watch your child and support them, you can find a place next to the bleachers and do some squats, jumping jacks, or any other stationary exercise. And you’ll still be able to watch little Johnny hit his first home run.
On the weekends, you can take your family and find some active activities. Go to Howard Amon park and grab a tennis court.
Go on family hikes. There’s a new trail on Candy Mountain. And most kids can make it to the bench at Badger, then go to the park to play.
Find a bike path. Your kids can ride, while you run or walk.
The important thing is to be active with your kids. Try to do it first thing after breakfast in the morning, before it gets too hot and while everyone still has energy.
There are also plenty of activities that aren’t geared for the kids. For example, there are lots of runs in the springtime. There are several 5k, 10k, half marathons, etc.
Three Rivers Road Runners has a calendar chock full of opportunities for competitive and recreational runs. Check out their website here.
Grab some friends, go to a ball field, and play some ultimate frisbee. Or try one of the adult sports leagues in the area.
Life Quest Fitness has adult soccer leagues. Kennewick Parks and Rec has softball leagues.
You can also check Facebook for events near you. There are always tons of things you can do, right in your own backyard.
Hopefully by now you understand there is no lack of ways to get outside, and to stay fit and healthy.
The most important thing is to get out in the sun, soak up some vitamin D, and enjoy life with your family.
And when you’re ready to come back to the gym, we’ll be here.
We wish you good health,
Columbia Basin Racquet Club
